I love Maggi. There, I have said it. I have warm memories of eating the delicious noodles after coming back from school, while studying till late night for exams and enjoying with friends at the college canteen. I can even make a mean Maggi! No kidding. It is one of the few things that I can make. Hence, you can understand my disappointment when the whole furore over Maggi happened a few months ago, and the subsequent withdrawal of Maggi from the Indian shops. I still have a lone pack of Maggi in my kitchen cupboard, kept for a rainy day. J

Now, Nestle is geared up to re-launch Maggi in the markets very soon. And to give it mighty competition, even Ramdev Baba has launched Patanjali Atta Noodles. The USP of these noodles – they are cheap (at least 30% less than Maggi’s atta noodles) and healthy (with no addition of any controversial ingredient).

Most people have a long-term relationship with Maggi, but Nestle really broke its customers’ trust. Will the customers be able to forgive it? Will consumers obliterate the past so easily, and run towards Baba Ramdev’s noodles? What will win – the relationship or health – the need of the hour?

Now, what would you root for in your startup – Nestle’s long term relationship and knowledge of the customers’ pulse or Ramdev Baba’s discounted prices and health factor? In my opinion, you should take the best of  both Nestle and Maggi, but ensuring that your product doesn’t break your customer’s trust – now, later and never.
