marriages are made in heaven

I am not sure, if you have ever thought it this way. I feel founding a startup is like getting into an arranged marriage. You jump in good faith, but don’t know what’s going to happen. Laugh if you feel like. But, do not say there isn’t some truth in it.

Now, let’s see some dos and don’ts to keep the marriage, arrr, the founding team happy and working together.

  • Get to know each other – Much like you would with your prospective spouse, sit down and have an honest conversation about what each of you want from the startup, what you can bring to the table and how you see the future.
  • Stand on equal footing – Each partner, irrespective of his position, must have a say in all decisions and respect one another equally.
  • Be transparent – Like in a real marriage, honesty is the best policy. Design a flow of information which keeps everyone updated, even if a partner is not directly involved in the process.
  • Don’t argue, discuss – Don’t play the blame game. Discuss. Working through issues in a friendly and supportive manner will strengthen your team.
  • Become friends – Get out of the office and go out to dinner with your team and their families. Get to know them. Make friends, that’s one advantage of being part of a startup.
  • Enjoy the good times, roll with the bad ones – Initially, there will be a lot of bad ones. But if you keep your chin up, you will succeed. A start-up might shut shop prematurely because the founders did not accept problems as a path to eventual success.
