Apps can be stupid!

2015 has been a year of apps, especially for India. With the growing number of smartphone users in the Indian market and the ready availability of the low-cost Internet, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that people are hooked to all kinds of apps on their smartphones. There are apps for lifestyle, shopping, hiring cabs, booking tickets, taking a doctor’s appointment, dating and many other services.

Well, most of them are pretty useful too, and have made life easier. I can’t imagine a day when the apps for Ola and Uber were non-existent. They are such an integral part of my life now. I am sure, there must be many apps on your smartphone that make your life comfortable.

On the flip side, there are some apps which somehow do not make sense. It’s not that the entrepreneur didn’t have the best interest of his users in his mind, or didn’t want to make their life easier. It’s just that the customers don’t find value in using that app. For example, Yo. Do you know what this app does? All this app does is send the word ‘Yo’ to another user of the app. Seriously! Or the iBeer that makes it look like your phone has beer in it and you are drinking the beer from your phone.

Recently, I read an interview of GVK heir Keshav Reddy who quoted – “I don’t want an app to tag all my clothes so that I can find them digitally. It’s stupid.” My sentiments exactly, though I wouldn’t like to be as verbose.

An app is a great innovation. However, every app should be aimed at helping the customers. If it can’t justify it’s importance or usefulness to the people who use it, it shouldn’t be there in the first place. What do you think, friends?
